There is an appealing history to the Cambodia gambling dens that sit just over the border from neighboring Thailand, where gambling hall betting is banned. Eight gambling dens are anchored in a relatively tiny space in the metropolis of Poipet in Cambodia. This band of Cambodia gambling halls is in a perfect destination, a 3 to 4 hour travel from Bangkok and Macao, the two most popular gambling locations in Asia. Cambodia gambling dens do a huge business with Thai blue-collar workers and tourists from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a few Westerners. The phenomenal capital accrued from the gambling halls ranges from seven and a half million dollars to more than 12.5 million dollars, and there are a few controls constraints for casino ownership. Ownership is assumed to be mainly Thai; however, financial sources are vague. The borders are ceremoniously open from 9:00 a.m. to 1700, and although visas are supposedly necessary to cross, there are ways around this, as is real of many borders.
The original Cambodia gambling dens premiered in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were required to close in 1998, leaving just one gambling hall in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a stationary bateau casino, highlights 150 slot machines and 60 gaming tables. The Naga river boat never closes with 42 tables of mini-baccarat, four tables of chemin de fer, ten of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and 1 each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The first gambling den in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in the late nineties and the Golden Crown quickly followed. A total of one hundred and fifty slot machines and five tables at the Golden Crown and 104 slot machine games and sixty eight tables at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort highlights three hundred slot machines and 70 gaming tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slots and 96 gaming tables, including eighty seven baccarat chemin de fer (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. In addition, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slot machines and 66 of the normal tables, as well as one table of Casino Stud Poker. Another one of the eight casinos in Poipet, again a part of a motel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six slot machines and ninety seven games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of a comprehensive resort and hotel compound that features a number of conveniences on top of the casino, which offers 10,000 sq.ft. of one hundred and thirty slots and eighty eight gaming tables.
